“Basics on C∗-algebras” Abstract
The goal of this seminar series is to go through Vern Paulsen’s ‘Completely Bounded Maps and Operator Algebras’. In this first installment, we will cover chapter 1. The basic order structure of a C∗-algebra will be reviewed, as well as basic concepts which arise naturally by considering matrices of these objects. We will discuss dilations of operators insofar as they are needed to understand Sz.-Nagy’s dilation theorem, and von Neumann’s inequality. We will conclude our first meeting by going over some exercises at the end of chapter 1.

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is centralized within our Office of Indigenous Relations.
