"Constructing paper numbers and other applications of folds"
Have you ever wondered how origami is used in space? Want to know why paper is stronger than a ruler and compass? Or do you want to solve degree 3 polynomials in a hands on way? Well regardless of which catches your interest, it turns out that all of these questions and more have answers in the language of folding paper. In particular we will see that by giving origami a rigid mathematical treatment, then there is a surprising amount that can be uncovered.
So if using Euclid's methods leave you wanting, then join us as we discuss this powerful technique that also doesn't cut it.

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is co-ordinated within our Office of Indigenous Relations.
