"Non-linear fractals and Hausdorff measure"
The most commonly studied objects in fractal geometry are ‘self-similar sets’ such as the Cantor middle-third set. They are the invariant sets of linear maps and a great deal is known about them. We will review some of the more important results but will move on to ‘quasi self-similar sets’ which involve non-linear functions and include the quadratic Julia sets. We will see how they differ and why the semicircle has been frustrating me for the past three years.

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is co-ordinated within our Office of Indigenous Relations.
