“The von Neumann Double Commutant Theorem”
We will take some time to review topologies on B(H) before proving the celebrated von Neumann Double Commutant Theorem. This remarkable result relates the WOT-closure of an algebra of oper- ators (a topological concept) to the algebra’s second commutant (a purely algebraic concept). As the seminar progresses we shall see that its usefulness cannot be overstated.
