Model Theory Seminar | Fateme Peimany | DCCM: the differential expansion of CCM

Fateme Peimany, University of Waterloo

DCCM: the differential expansion of CCM

We introduce the theory of compact complex spaces called CCM and expand it to DCCM, the theory of differentially closed CCM-structures. Finally, we will explain the good model-theoretic properties of DCCM and open problems in this theory.

Dylan Galt (Harvard University)
Dimension Reduction and Adiabatic Limits of Generalized ASD Instantons
I will describe ongoing joint work with Langte Ma constructing generalized anti-self-dual (ASD) instantons over product manifolds. In a previous paper, we used an integrability theorem to describe the moduli space of generalized anti-self-dual instantons over product manifolds when the bundle is a pullback, generalizing results of Yuanqi Wang. I will begin by describing this theorem. Then, I will explain ongoing work on an adiabatic limit construction to give examples of generalized ASD instantons over non-pullback bundles. The analysis draws on techniques developed by Dostolgu and Salamon and the results are intended to complement our previous work on dimension reduction. Throughout, I will discuss applications of our work to motivating examples from special holonomy.

Filtered Deformations of Trivariate Polynomial Rings

Among non-commutative rings, those satisfying a polynomial identity (PI) are especially well-behaved. They share many properties with commutative rings, which we understand well. Etingof asked whether every filtered deformation of a finitely generated commutative domain, over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic, is PI. In this talk, we will answer this question of Etingof affirmatively for deformations of polynomial rings in three variables. In the pre-seminar, I will define and discuss the properties of filtered deformations

Number Theory Seminar | Jerry Wang | Counting A_4-quartics by discriminant

Jerry Wang (University of Waterloo)

Counting \(A_4\)-quartics by discriminant
An \(A_4\)-quartic is a degree 4 extension of Q whose Galois closure has Galois group \(A_4\). They are the last remaining quartic fields for which we didn't have an asymptotic counting formula. In this joint work with Stanley Xiao, we prove that the the number of \(A_4\)-quartics of discriminant at most \(X\) is \(\kappa_{A_4}X^{1/2}\log X + O_\epsilon(X^{1/2}(\log\log X)^{3+\epsilon})\)) where \(\kappa_{A_4}\) is an explicit constant with an Euler product expansion.

Differential Geometry Working Seminar | Faisal Romshoo | Flows of positive triples

Faisal Romshoo (University of Waterloo)
Flows of positive triples
We will discuss positive triples on a 4-manifold and the representation theory that arises from these structures. I will also aim to talk about the notion of an "isometric flow" of positive triples, which will be a negative gradient flow of a natural energy functional restricted to the "isometric class" of positive triples.

Student Number Theory Seminar | Julius Frizzell | Lehmer's Conjecture and Related Problems

Julius Frizzell (University of Waterloo)

Lehmer's Conjecture and Related Problems

The Mahler measure of a polynomial is the product of the moduli of it's roots lying outside the unit disk. Lehmer's conjecture says that, among polynomials with integer coefficients that are not cyclotomic, there exists a polynomial with minimal Mahler measure. We will discuss the history and original motivation behind Lehmer's problem and the known partial results. We will also look at other problems related to Mahler measure, such as questions arising from looking at the divisors of Newman polynomials.

Model Theory Seminar | Rahim Moosa | Around the wild automorphism conjecture

Rahim Moosa (University of Waterloo)

Around the wild automorphism conjecture

The wild automorphism conjecture, of Reichstein, Rogalski, and Zhang from 2006, proposes that if a projective algebraic variety X (in characteristic zero) admits an automorphism that leaves no proper subvariety invariant then X is an abelian variety. I will discuss recent work with Jason Bell where we use tools from the model theory of difference fields (developed last year by Moshe Kamensky and I) to resolve the “compound fundamental isotrivial” case. I will also give a counterexample to the naive nonautonomous generalisation of the conjecture, exhibiting some of the difficulties in applying a model-theoretic analysis.
