Pure Math Grad Colloquium

Jacques van Wyk, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

"Can you win at Tetris?"

Tuesday, August 1, 2023 11:00 am - 11:00 am EDT (GMT -04:00)

Chiral de Rham Seminar

Changho Han, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

"Derived Categories, de Rham Complex, and baby Riemann-Hilbert"

Continuing from the last time, I will briefly discuss the derived category, then define pushforwards and pullbacks in this derived setting. Then, I will define the de Rham complex, which can be used to compute pushforward. If time remains, then I will explain the (baby version) of the Riemann-Hilbert correspondence.

Differential Geometry Working Seminar

Talk #1 (1:00pm - 2:30pm)

Michael Albanese, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

"The Schoen-Yau Stable Minimal Hypersurface Technique"

Tuesday, August 1, 2023 2:30 pm - 2:30 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Operator Algebras Learning Seminar

Oscar Patrón Fonseca, University of Waterloo

"On Quasi-nilpotent operators"

It is a well known result that Quasi-nilpotent operators are norm limits of nilpotent operators. We will give a short proof of this fact with the help of one of Voiculescu's theorem on representations of C* algebras.

"Mind the GAP: Amenability Constants and Arens Regularity of Fourier Algebras"

Wednesday, August 2, 2023 3:00 pm - 3:00 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Model Theory Working Seminar

Christine Eagles, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

"Rings without the Canonical Basis Property"

We will be reading "Rings of finite Morley rank without the CBP" by Loesch and Palacin. This talk will present the background algebra required for the construction.

PhD Thesis Defence

Andrej Vukovic, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

"Divisibility of Discriminants of Homogeneous Polynomials"

We prove several square-divisibility results about the discriminant of homogeneous polynomials of arbitrary degree and number of variables, when certain coefficients vanish, and give characterizations for when the discriminant is divisible by p2 for p prime.

Thursday, August 3, 2023 2:30 pm - 2:30 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Computability Theory Learning Seminar

Luke MacLean, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

"Back-and-forth relations of Abelian groups"

We will provide a partial characterization of the back-and-forth relations on countable reduced Abelian p-groups. This will, in turn, help us to provide upper bounds on the Scott complexities of such structures. This work relies heavily on Ulm's theorem, and so a proof sketch will be given.
