Group Cohomology learning seminar

Ty Ghaswala, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

“A Finite Group Walks Into a Bar...”

Last week, Rob seamlessly introduced the bar resolution, and showed us how we can view elements of Hn(G, A) as equ

Simon Marshall, Northwestern University

"L^p norms of eigenfunctions on locally symmetric spaces"

Wednesday, November 27, 2013 4:00 pm - 4:00 pm EST (GMT -05:00)

Special colloquium

Yi Wang, Stanford University

"Isoperimetric inequality and Q-curvature"

A well-known question in differential geometry is to prove the isoperimetric inequality under intrinsic curvature conditions. In dimension 2, the isoperimetric inequality is controlled by the integral of the positive part of the Gaussian curvature. In my recent work, I prove that on simply connected conformally flat manifolds of higher dimensions, the role of the Gaussian curvature can be replaced by the Branson's Q-curvature.

Student colloquium

Michael Ng, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

“SPECTRUM”

We have probably come across the term ”SPECTRUM” in different contexts, and we may wonder how they are related to each other.

Friday, November 29, 2013 2:30 pm - 2:30 pm EST (GMT -05:00)

Universal Algebra seminar

Ross Willard, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

“Varieties with a difference term. III”

I will complete the proof that a certain syntactic condition characterizes the class of varieties having a difference term.

Friday, November 29, 2013 3:30 pm - 3:30 pm EST (GMT -05:00)

Analysis seminar

Ping Wong Ng, University of Louisiana

"Sums of projections in certain simple purely infinite C*-algebras”

Let A be a simple unital purely infinite C*-algebra whose K0 group is a torsion group.

Monday, December 2, 2013 4:00 pm - 4:00 pm EST (GMT -05:00)

Pure Math colloquium

Matthew Kennedy, Carleton University

“Operator algebraic geometry”

In this talk I will give an overview of an area of mathematics that combines the theory of operator algebras with ideas and methods from commutative algebra and classical algebraic geometry. The basic idea is to study operators (or matrices) satisfying a system of polynomial equations.

Tuesday, December 3, 2013 10:30 am - 10:30 am EST (GMT -05:00)

Constraint Satisfaction and Universal Algebra learning seminar

Ian Payne, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

“More Preliminaries for the Proof of the Bounded Width Conjecture”

I will state and prove one last Lemma, and then quickly prove the main Lemma stated last week. After that, I will go through section 7.3.

Tuesday, December 3, 2013 1:30 pm - 1:30 pm EST (GMT -05:00)

Special Algebra learning seminar

**Postponed until January, 2014**

Spiro Karigiannis, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

"Introduction to octonions, G2, F4, and triality (I)"

We will be discussing some notes by Shingo Murukami (available online) on exceptional Lie groups (particularly G2 and F4) and their relations to the octonions, including the notion of triality. This will be the first of at least two parts.

Wednesday, December 4, 2013 1:30 pm - 1:30 pm EST (GMT -05:00)

Geometry & Topology seminar

Diarmuid Crowley, Max Planck Institute for Mathematics

“A new invariant of G2 structures”

I will report on recent where we define an invariant of diffeomorphisms and homotopies of a G2 structure on a closed 7-manifold M.
