Colloquia | Periods of Calabi-Yau Manifolds in Physics and Number Theory

Speaker:

Philip Candelas, University of Oxford

Abstract:

There are two groups of people, string theorists and number theorists, who believe that they 'own' the periods of Calabi-Yau manifolds. I will explain why the periods are important to each of these nonintersecting groups. I wish to speculate also about the possible role of `quantum corrections' and mirror symmetry to the zeta function.
