Joint Student Colloquium

Ty Ghaswala, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

"Hairstyles for a Mathematician"

Besides being a useful hair taming technique, braids are also a beautiful object in mathematics.  In this talk I will give a selective tour of the wonderful world of braids.  We will explore some interesting mathematical nooks and crannies in which braids arise, focusing on a particular representation (the Burau representation) and its connection to knot invariants.

von Neumann Algebra Learning Seminar

Satish Pandey, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

“Projections in von Neumann Algebras - Part II (continued)”

Thursday, May 26, 2016 11:30 pm - 11:30 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Geometry Working Seminar

Anton Borissov, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

“Aspects of Toric Geometry”

I will quickly go over the basic notions underlying toric varieties and then describe how to use symplectic reduction to construct them. After mentioning the relationship between Fano varieties and reflexive polytopes we will go through a series of examples to illustrate the theory.

von Neumann Algebra Learning Seminar

Bahaa Khadda, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

“Classifications of Projections and Types”

We will define the notion of a finite/infinite projection in a von Neumann algebra and explore some basic properties. The classification of projections as finite or infinite will allow for an introduction to types of von Neumann algebras.
