"Divisibility of Discriminants of Homogeneous Polynomials"

We prove several square-divisibility results about the discriminant of homogeneous polynomials of arbitrary degree and number of variables, when certain coefficients vanish, and give characterizations for when the discriminant is divisible by p2 for p prime.

Computability Theory Learning Seminar

Luke MacLean, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

"Back-and-forth relations of Abelian groups"

We will provide a partial characterization of the back-and-forth relations on countable reduced Abelian p-groups. This will, in turn, help us to provide upper bounds on the Scott complexities of such structures. This work relies heavily on Ulm's theorem, and so a proof sketch will be given.

"Normal schemes and what-not"

We’ll discuss what makes a scheme “normal”, and in the event that your scheme is weird we’ll see how to “normalize” it. I plan to discuss other related concepts; maybe regularity and local factoriality.
