The Government of Canada has awarded two new Canada Excellence Research Chairs (CERC) to the University of Waterloo.
Waterloo’s new CERCs are among 34 announced at 18 postsecondary institutions across Canada today by the Honourable Terry Beech, Minister of Citizens’ Services, on behalf of the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry.
The new CERCs at Waterloo are:
Sara Hart
Canada Excellence Research Chair in Developmental Science
Renée Miller
Canada Excellence Research Chair in Data Intelligence
The Government of Canada investment of $248 million in support of the 34 new CERCs represents the largest number of CERCs awarded in a single competition in the history of the program. The funding will allow the new Chairs to establish research facilities in Canada and contribute to their institutions’ pursuit of excellence in research, train young scholars and scientists, and develop a new generation of world-class talent.
Waterloo currently has one Canada Excellence Research Chair, Katja Mombaur (Human-Centred Robotics and Machine Intelligence) and two Canada Excellence Research Chair Laureates: Philippe Van Cappellen (Ecohydrology) and David Cory (Quantum Information Processing)
