Patricia Marino, Professor, Philosophy
I am a Professor in the Department of Philosophy. In the roughly twenty years I've been at UW, I've served as Department Chair, as member of the Arts Tenure, Permanence, and Promotion Committee, and multiple times on our Department Tenure and Promotion Committee; I've also taken on a range of departmental roles such as Associate Chair for Graduate Studies. My interest in serving as Arts Representative is to provide input reflecting Arts priorities; Arts perspective is important for decisions in a wide range of areas including academic matters, institutional planning, and the relationship of the university with our broader community.
Sarah Turnbull, Associate Professor, Sociology and Legal Studies
I am Associate Professor of Sociology and Legal Studies and a faculty member at the Balsillie School of International Affairs. I am standing as a candidate for senator for the Faculty of Arts because I believe the current context—i.e., financial precarity at UW and in the higher education sector more generally, and political and populist attacks on the arts, humanities, and social sciences and on EDI, academic freedom, and university governance—requires a strong voice in the Senate. As a recently tenured faculty member, I offer my service and my commitment to integrity, transparency, and collegial governance.
Paul Ugor, Professor, English
Dr. Paul Ugor, Professor in the Department of English Language and Literature at the University of Waterloo, is a distinguished scholar in African literature, youth cultures, and global Black studies. His research and teaching foreground issues of equity, representation, and interdisciplinary engagement. As a candidate for Senate, Dr. Ugor is committed to fostering inclusive academic governance, advancing scholarly excellence, and supporting diverse intellectual communities. His dedication to critical inquiry and institutional service positions him as a valuable contributor to Senate deliberations and decision-making. He welcomes the opportunity to serve and contribute meaningfully to the University’s academic mission.
Bojana Videkanic, Associate Professor, Fine Arts
It would be an honour to serve on UW’s Senate. My journey from arriving in Canada as a young refugee to becoming a practicing artist and academic has shaped my belief in the power of diversity. I am deeply committed to fostering equity, empathy, and creative engagement across campus. Since joining Fine Arts in 2010, I have valued every opportunity to advocate for students, staff, and colleagues in leadership and committee roles. I am passionate about supporting the arts, humanities, and social sciences, and believe they form the core of academia. Arts' values are vital to our future.
