The Clean Snowmobile Challenge is a collegiate design competition organized by the Society of Automotive Engineers focused on reducing the environmental impact of snowmobiles, in particular the issues of noise and tailpipe emissions.

Student teams compete against one another in an effort to find novel solutions to these problems while maintaining performance, keeping costs at a minimum, and successfully completing their projects in just eight months.

The goal of the Challenge is to generate new ideas and technologies that can be implemented by industry while giving students real-world experience in design implementation, team work and project management.

Approximately nineteen different teams compete annually in the Clean Snowmobile Challenge, with modified snowmobiles being tested for design, noise, exhaust emissions, fuel economy, cold-start capabilities, acceleration and handling. All the snowmobiles were flex-fuel vehicles, able to run bio-fuels with up to 85% ethanol content
