Warrior Home

warriorhome

Warrior Home is a multidisciplinary student team that designs and builds high-performing, net-zero energy, affordable, and sustainable homes for community housing organizations. In 2020, we will be partnering with Ottawa Community Housing. In the past, Warrior Home has partnered with Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region, the Chippewas of Nawash, an indigenous community settled along the Grey Bruce peninsula on the Neyaashiiningmiing reserve, and Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce. Members of the Warrior Home Design Team have volunteered with Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce and Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region to build the homes and bring the designs to life.

Our research and development are directed toward implementing green technology while maintaining an affordable value. In order to provide top quality service to our community housing partners, we participate in the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon. The competition will provide students with research and skills that will be used for the benefit of our community housing partners. Students working on the design team are receiving an unparalleled learning opportunity that includes hands-on experience and real-world engineering knowledge.

Goals and Objectives:

  • Research high performance homes, best building science techniques, and best construction practices which are incorporated into the home design
  • Acquire understanding of market value, governmental policy, and occupant desire
  • Compete in the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon
  • Perform cost, energy, and feasibility analysis and provide recommendations
  • Utilize sensitivity analysis to determine best solutions
  • Implement green technology into our home designs while balancing occupant budget

University of Waterloo Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter:

The design team is an internal affiliate of the University of Waterloo Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter. The Campus Chapter is a group of students who are passionate about helping families build better lives for themselves and are ready to take the next step to lead the charge in making our community a better place. All members fulfil Habitat's four main functions by volunteering in our community, educating the university around issues related to housing, fundraising in the area to support more housing opportunities, and speaking with community officials to prioritize shelter. All Warrior Home members are encouraged to participate in Campus Chapter Events and Volunteering.
