The Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science proudly celebrates the appointment of Dr. Gord Willmot as Distinguished Professor Emeritus, recognizing his outstanding research, mentorship, and more than four decades of transformative contributions to the University of Waterloo and the global actuarial science community.

The Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science is thrilled to announce Dr. Mary Hardy’s appointment as Distinguished Professor Emerita, celebrating her extraordinary impact over 26 years as a trailblazing scholar, educator, and leader whose work has helped shape the future of actuarial science at Waterloo and beyond.

Alexandra Bühler co-won a Graduate Research Excellence Award ($2500) for her paper “Multistate models as a framework for estimand specification in clinical trials of complex processes.” Alexandra graduated in 2024 with a PhD in Biostatistics.

Alexandra's co-supervisors Richard Cook and Jerry Lawless remarked that "Alexandra was an exceptional doctoral student and a joy to supervise. It is very gratifying to see her creative and important work recognized through this award. Notably, the same paper was recently recognized as one of the top 10 most cited papers in Statistics in Medicine in 2023."

Richard Cook awarded major CIHR funding

Richard Cook, a professor in the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Sciences, is the recipient of a major Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) funding award.

Richard J. Cook, a professor in the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Sciences, has been named a fellow the Royal Society of Canada (RSC). The prestigious RSC award accentuates Cook’s storied academic career and voluminous research portfolio.

Cecilia Cotton from the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Sciences has been named a winner of this year’s Awards for Distinction in Teaching from the Faculty of Mathematics.

The annual teaching award goes to faculty members who have consistently demonstrated outstanding pedagogical skills and a deep commitment to students. The winners are honoured by a public citation along with a cash prize.
