Let’s take a moment to think about the important role that love, kindness and care towards self plays through practicing self-compassion.
What is self-compassion?
Self-compassion means treating ourselves with the same kindness, care, and understanding that we would offer to someone else. Kristen Neff, leading scholar on self-compassion, describes self-compassion as the following: “Doing a U-turn and giving yourself the same compassion you’d naturally show a friend when you’re struggling or feeling badly about yourself.” (Neff, 2026).
It's often easier to show compassion towards others than it is towards ourselves. However, research shows that practicing self-compassion not only improves our motivation, performance and overall physical and mental well-being, but also helps us be more compassionate with others (Neff, 2023). In short, self-compassion is a win-win.
Here's a few ways to show yourself compassion:
Tip #1 - Practice mindfulness
Allow thoughts and feelings to exist as they are — resist overanalyzing.

Tip #2 - Challenge Your Inner Critic
Use positive self-talk by using words that you would use to support someone close to you.
Instead of saying, “I messed up,” try saying “I've made a mistake, and that's okay. I’m learning and doing my best.”
Tip #3 - Understand Your Emotions
Consider how uncomfortable emotions might be signalling an inner need or value.
Practice communicating needs and boundaries to others.
Learning about self-compassion helped me to pause, reflect on my emotions, and show myself the same kindness I show others.
Tip #4 - Practice Empathy
See the common humanity in people and experiences.
Practice perspective taking, empathy and forgiveness of self and others.
Tip #5 - Make Friends with Self-care
Instead of working against your body, work with your body by sleep, nutrition, hydration and relaxation to function efficiently and to bounce back from stress.

The Benefits of Self-Compassion
Cultivating self-compassion leads to increased motivation, increased performance and an overall increase in mental and physical well-being (Neff, 2023). Practicing self-compassion can make a meaningful difference in how we respond to stress, mistakes, and everyday challenges. Instead of being overly critical of ourselves, approaching difficult moments with patience and understanding can help us stay motivated and cope well with setbacks. Over time, this mindset can support stronger emotional resilience and a healthier relationship with ourselves.
By recognizing that challenges and imperfections are a normal part of being human, we can approach our experiences with greater balance and perspective.
