The Campus Response Team (CRT) is a student-run service that provides support to the UWaterloo main campus.

By offering their services to all major events and activities taking place on campus, CRT plays a crucial role in the safety of students.

  • CRT is equipped to provide care in medical emergencies, trauma injuries, and mental health crises.
  • In cases of more serious emergencies, CRT responders are trained to take charge of a scene and provide initial care prior to the arrival of Emergency Medical Services (EMS).

Need First Aid?

CRT is on-call Mondays through Fridays from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.. Call us at 226-339-0462 or find us in our office in Mathematics and Computer building (MC) 2015.

If you cannot reach us or need urgent medical care, call 911.

Mission

The CRT works to:

  • Increase community safety by providing trained volunteers to offer first aid services across campus.
  • Support students in improving their health and safety by sharing information and resources.
  • Build awareness of health and safety issues across campus.

Get Involved

To be eligible to apply to CRT, you must:

  • Be an undergraduate or graduate student at the University of Waterloo
  • Have a valid Standard First Aid and CPR-C certification or higher (CPR BLS is recommended) from a recognized Canadian agency approved by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board of Ontario.
  • Must be able to commit to a minimum of two terms with CRT - need not be consecutive.

Training

The Campus Response Team operates at the Standard First Aid and BLS level of care. Most members are trained at the First Responder (FR) or Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) level.

All active members undergo mandatory trainings every term, including a training weekend at the beginning of the term and an additional 3 training nights throughout the rest of the term. CRT also hosts a large-scale, in-house, first aid competition called CasSim (Casualty Simulation) once per term. This competition simulates a variety of challenging emergencies with CRT members responding and being evaluated by their peers.

Commitment

CRT members are typically required to take 20 hours of shifts during the term, in addition to doing 2 hours of advocacy work. Senior responders are asked to take on-call hours as well. However, this is subject to change each term.

All successful applicants will be required to complete a First Responder certification course, often offered during their second term on the team.
