The President's Advisory Committee on Environmental Sustainability (PACES) is excited to provide funding for four new campus sustainability projects in spring 2019 through the Sustainability Action Fund (SAF). Launched in 2017, the SAF supports projects and initiatives that advance sustainability at Waterloo by connecting to our academic mission, improving operational practices, and/or fostering a culture of sustainability through campus engagement.

Spring 2019 projects:

Waste receptacle

Architecture Waste Receptacles

This project will support the expansion of Waterloo's new three and four stream waste receptacles into the undergraduate studios at the School of Architecture. The new receptacles will replace standalone waste bins and will be a starting point for integration into the rest of the school. This project is led by the School of Architecture.

Conference on Sustainability in Engineering

This project will fund the Conference on Sustainable Engineering hosted at the University of Waterloo. The conference will educate and encourage students to understand the importance of sustainability in engineering and in their daily lives. Over 150 students will attend the conference from 44 engineering universities across Canada. This project is led by students from the Faculty of Engineering.

Energy meter

Energy Audit Metering

This project will measure the electrical and other relevant energy consumption of 10 buildings on campus as the first step of a campus-wide energy audit required for Waterloo’s Climate and Energy Action Plan. Data collection and analysis will be performed by researchers on campus with some equipment being built at Waterloo. This project is led by researchers from the Faculty of Engineering and Plant Operations.

Jar for zero waste weeek

Zero Waste Event

This project will fund a day-long zero waste event hosted by Campus Compost. The event will have keynote speakers, workshops, educational booths, and networking opportunities. The zero waste event will provide a fun and accessible way for students and staff to learn more about waste reduction and sustainable living. This project is led by Campus Compost.

Since 2017, SAF has distributed over $200,000 in funding to projects across campus. To learn more about the funding criteria, application details, and upcoming funding rounds, please visit the Sustainability Action Fund webpage.
