Abstract

Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is among the most commonly performed orthopedic procedures, yet Canadian data on implant selection trends, including fixation method, patellar resurfacing, stability design, and manufacturer/model market dynamics, remain limited compared with other national registries. Understanding these patterns is essential to inform evidence-based implant selection, procurement policy, and post-market surveillance.

This retrospective cohort study used de-identified, record-level data from the Canadian Joint Replacement Registry (CJRR), accessed through the Canadian Institute for Health Information, covering primary TKA procedures from fiscal years 2019 to 2023. Trends in the adoption of cementless fixation, patellar resurfacing, and stability design, as well as implant manufacturer/model market share, were assessed. Canadian trends were benchmarked against international registries, including those from the United States, Australia, Sweden, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.

Overall, Canadian TKA practice shows evolving fixation and implant design preferences, a concentrated and shifting manufacturer landscape, and substantial provincial variation. These findings provide a foundation for more granular, implant-level surveillance in Canadian arthroplasty research.
