Dr. Nadine Marie Moacdieh, Associate Professor at Carleton University.
Dr. Moacdieh received her B.E. in Computer and Communications Engineering from the American University of Beirut and her Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Industrial and Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Her research focuses on human factors and human-computer interaction, with particular interests in visual clutter, driver distraction, automotive head-up displays, and eye-tracking methods.
Abstract
Augmented reality-head-up displays (AR-HUDs) overlay information in a driver's line of sight and have long been touted as key to safer driving. This applies both to manual and semi-automated driving, where the vehicle drives itself but drivers must take over when they might be engaging in a non-driving related task (NDRT). This talk will present an overview of the benefits and challenges of car AR-HUDs from a human factors standpoint. It will then describe a study that explored how NDRT workload interacts with the presence of an AR-HUD to affect takeover performance in semi-automated driving. This mixed-design virtual-reality study used both driving performance and subjective measures. The results suggest that a car AR-HUD can improve takeover performance, but that AR-HUDs might not be able to prevent the effect of high-workload NDRTs extending to the takeover phase.
