A company founded by three Waterloo Engineering students 15 years ago will receive a national honour next week for its innovative approach to traffic management.

Miovision is the 2020 recipient of the Innovator of the Year award given out annually by the Canadian Innovation Exchange (CIX) to a company that “disrupts and transforms an industry in profound ways.”

Kurtis McBride is co-founder and CEO of Miovision.

Based in Kitchener, the company was launched in 2005 while co-founders Kurtis McBride, Kevin Madill and Tony Brijpaul were still studying at Waterloo.

Miovision uses computer vision, artificial intelligence and computer modelling to help cities and towns improve traffic flow.

Its smart traffic platform modernizes traffic signals by adding connectivity and video-based measurement and analysis, enabling municipalities to reduce congestion and emissions while also improving safety.

“We pride ourselves on finding new and better ways to help cities and towns meet some of their most pressing challenges,” McBride, CEO of the company, said in a media release.

Miovision serves more than 17,000 municipalities around the world and has offices in Germany in addition to Kitchener.

It will receive the award Oct. 20 during the virtual CIX Digital Summit, an annual technology investment conference. Previous winners include Wattpad, Shopify and Desire2Learn.
