A second incoming student at Waterloo Engineering has landed a four-year, $70,000 scholarship from the TD Scholarships for Community Leadership program.
Jocelyne Murphy of Waterloo joins Chinemerem Chigbo of Winnipeg among 20 cross-country winners recognized for outstanding contributions to change in their communities.
Jocelyne Murphy is one of two TD scholarship winners at Waterloo Engineering.
Murphy, 18, is enrolled in systems design engineering at Waterloo. Chigbo, 17, plans to study computer engineering.
The scholarship provides $10,000 for living expenses and $7,500 for tuition each year.
“I still get butterflies in my stomach every so often when I think about the fact that this really happened because I never expected that I’d actually receive a scholarship when I applied,” Murphy told the Waterloo Region Record.
Her list of accomplishments includes heading a teen group to help charities and educate the next generation of philanthropists, volunteering as a soccer coach for children in low-income neighbourhoods, serving as an anti-bullying ambassador and competing as a member of her high school’s FIRST Robotics team.
The scholarship also includes mentorship opportunities and offers of summer jobs.
