SYDE welcomes Dr. Jonathan Kusins

Monday, April 7, 2025

The Department of Systems Design Engineering is thrilled to welcome Dr. Jonathan Kusins.

Dr. Kusins specializes in orthopaedic biomechanics, bringing with him a wealth of research and industry experience from both academic and commercial settings. He has held research roles at Western University, and most recently research and development positions with leading medical device companies NuVasive and Paragon 28.

Dr. Kusins holds a BESc, MESc, and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Western University. His doctoral research focused on developing advanced experimental techniques that integrate high-resolution imaging, mechanical testing, and digital volume correlation (DVC) to analyze internal load distribution within the shoulder joint.

Following his PhD, he led the development and testing of 3D-printed spinal interbody cages at NuVasive, guiding products from concept to commercialization with a focus on improving patient outcomes. At Paragon 28, he led preclinical biomechanics research to support the development of devices for lower extremity musculoskeletal disorders using morphological, experimental, and computational modeling methods.

Dr. Kusins is a strong advocate for the use of preclinical biomechanical assessments to establish the safety and efficacy of orthopaedic implants before clinical use. He has contributed to the successful commercialization of multiple medical devices across global markets.
