Systems design engineering gives you the solid technical background for many engineering fields, along with the freedom to be creative in choosing your own career path in upper years.
Some of our students go into engineering consulting or project management, while others go on to graduate school, taking on research and development work that pushes the leading edge of technology. Some of our graduates run their own companies, while others go on to degrees in business, law, or medicine. It really depends on the individual and what he or she wants to do.
Very few of our graduates found that they were limited by having a degree in Systems Design Engineering; if anything, they found it kept them flexible and opened doors to many opportunities. Students who are passionate about learning and exploring new options and who are willing to be flexible are always able to find a job – regardless of discipline.
Check out our graduates at work.

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is centralized within our Office of Indigenous Relations.
