How did computers get so smart? The Science Behind Artificial Intelligence

It’s everywhere now – on our phones, in our web browsers, in our social media apps, and more. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the hottest thing in tech today, but what exactly is it? In this workshop, participants will learn how AI and machine learning (ML) algorithms work and where they could actually be useful. We will also discuss issues around data bias, fairness, and ethical concerns that arise when using AI. Finally, Participants will create an image classifier by training a machine learning algorithm using Google’s Teachable Machine.

Designing User Interfaces: Prototyping in Figma

Ever wanted to design your own app but didn’t know where to start? In this workshop, participants will be introduced to the basics of UI design and prototyping using Figma, a leading industry tool for designing and prototyping digital interfaces. The session includes a guided walkthrough of Figma followed by a hands-on activity where participants will create their own simple app or interface design. Talking to the Internet: An Introduction to APIs

Curious how apps get data from the internet? In this workshop, participants will explore how applications communicate using APIs (Application Programming Interfaces). Using basic coding, you’ll learn how to send requests and work with real data from online services. Along the way, we’ll introduce key concepts like dictionaries and how they help organize and access information returned by APIs. In a hands-on activity, participants will build a simple interactive project that connects to live data.
