Bill Cook
Bill Cook (PhD 1983, Combinatorics and Optimization) was awarded a Faculty of Mathematics Alumni Achievement Medal for fundamental contributions to combinatorial optimization and, in particular, the travelling salesman problem.

Congratulations to Combinatorics and Optimization Professors Jim Geelen, Penny Haxell, Alfred Menezes and Levent Tunçel, recipients of the University of Waterloo's Outstanding Performance Fund Award established in 2003 to reward faculty members for outstanding contribution in teaching and scholarship.

Algebraic combinatorics - algebra or combinatorics?

Abstract

This talk will feature a number of examples that illustrate what algebraic combinatorics means to the speaker. Throughout, the interplay between algebraic and combinatorial methods is emphasized.

'Math nerd' now at the faculty's helm

Ian Goulden
Ian Goulden, the dean of mathematics, was inducted last week as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada — a reminder that he’s a scholar and researcher as well as, since he took the dean’s job last July 1, one of the University of Waterloo’s senior administrators.

Ron Graham
Fall 2010 convocation – MBET, Engineering, Environment, Mathematics, and Science

Ron Graham is one of the world's leading discrete mathematicians. He has made important contributions to number theory, graph theory, combinatorial optimization and extremal combinatorics, among other areas. In several instances, his contributions have initiated or revolutionized a research area.
