The following C&O students received their graduate degrees at the fall 2013 convocation. Congratulations to all and best of luck for the future!

Abbas Mehrabian
Abbas Mehrabian, a PhD student in the Combinatorics and Optimization department, has been awarded a 2013 Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship. This is a prestigious three-year doctoral scholarship valued at $50,000/year. Abbas is being co-supervised by Professors Nick Wormald and Joseph Cheriyan. The title of Abbas's research proposal was "The Query Complexity of Graph Property Testers in the Dense Graph Model".

Bob E. Bixby received an honorary Doctor of Mathematics (DMath). He is well known for his early work on matroid connectivity and representability, and his later work on linear optimization. His CPLEX software for linear optimization and mixed integer programming is widely used around the world.

Ahmad Abdi

Ahmad Abdi (BMath 2013) is the winner of the second Jessie W.H. Zou Memorial Award for Excellence in undergraduate research in the Faculty of Mathematics. Ahmad was an Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) undergraduate research assistant in spring 2011 and spring 2012, working with Professors Ricardo Fukasawa and Bertrand Guenin.

Andrew Childs
Congratulations to Combinatorics and Optimization Professor Andrew Childs for being named recipient of a 2013 Outstanding Performance Fund Award. In 2003, the University of Waterloo established the Outstanding Performance Fund to reward faculty members for outstanding contribution in teaching and scholarship.
