Professor Levent Tuncel was announced a winner of the 2014 University of Waterloo Distinguished Teacher Award. This prestigious award is presented to four faculty members each year at the spring convocation.

Scott Vanstone was awarded an Honourary Lifetime Achievement Award at the Canadian Technology Leaders Awards ceremony held at The Distillery Historic District in Toronto. The award was presented by John Tory to Scott's wife, Sherry Shannon-Vanstone.

PhD student Andre Linhares is focused on theoretical problems making a difference in the medical world.

Abbas Mehrabian, a PhD student in the Combinatorics and Optimization department, has been awarded a 2013 Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship. This is a prestigious three-year doctoral scholarship valued at $50,000/year. Abbas is being co-supervised by Professors Nick Wormald and Joseph Cheriyan. The title of Abbas's research proposal was "The Query Complexity of Graph Property Testers in the Dense Graph Model".

Bob E. Bixby received an honorary Doctor of Mathematics (DMath). He is well known for his early work on matroid connectivity and representability, and his later work on linear optimization. His CPLEX software for linear optimization and mixed integer programming is widely used around the world.
