Award description:
Three awards are awarded annually based on the students’ participation in a recognized institutional Canadian-organized German language or cultural studies program abroad.

  • WCGS Study Travel Awards - IcGS Program: valued at up to $2,000 per student, are awarded annually to full-time graduate students enrolled in the Joint lntercultural German Studies degree program.
  • WCGS Study Travel Awards- University of Waterloo: valued from $500 up to $1,500 per student, are awarded annually to full-time undergraduate or graduate students registered within the first four years of their program within the Faculty of Arts at the University of Waterloo. Interested students must complete an application found on the WCGS website and submit it by February 28.
  • WCGS Study Travel Awards - Canadian Universities: valued from $500 to $1,500 per student, are awarded annually to full-time undergraduate or graduate students registered within the first four years of their program at a Canadian University. Interested students must complete an application found on the WCGS website and submit it by February 28.

These awards are made possible by a donation from Fred and Ruth Stork, and their children Michael and Marion, as loyal friends and supporters of the University of Waterloo, the Kitchener-Waterloo community and the Waterloo Centre for German Studies (WCGS).

Eligibility & selection criteria: 

WCGS Study Travel Award - IcGS Program

  • Full-time graduate students enrolled in the Joint lntercultural German Studies graduate degree program in the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies in the Faculty of Arts.
  • Selection to be based on enrolment in the Joint lntercultural German Studies Graduate degree program.
  • Recipients are required to submit a one-page report one month after their return from Germany.
  • The WCGS Director in conjunction with the Graduate Studies Officer will identify candidates and select recipients each fall.
  • Eligible students can apply for this award from year to year.

WCGS Study Travel Award - University of Waterloo

  • Full-time undergraduate or graduate students registered at the University of Waterloo.
  • Selection to be based on participation in a recognized institutional Canadian-organized German language or cultural studies program abroad (e.g. Waterloo in Germany, OBW, Canadian Summer School in Germany (Kassel), CAUTG Work Study Program, FUBiS).
  • Students must submit a one-page statement describing their intended program of study.
  • Students apply for this award by February 28 of each year for travel taking place between May 1 of that year and April 30 of the following year. The awards will be adjudicated by the WCGS executive committee based on this statement of intent.
  • The WCGS Director will notify the award winners. Students must confirm their registration and/or acceptance in the program before funds will be processed.
  • Students must declare if they are receiving other travel awards to subsidize their travel expenses.

WCGS Study Travel Award - Canadian Universities

  • Full-time undergraduate or graduate students registered within the first four years of their program at a Canadian University (normally not a uWaterloo student) who will be participating in a recognized. institutional Canadian-organized German language or cultural studies program abroad (e.g. Canadian Summer School in Germany (Kassel), Canadian Year in Freiburg, CAUTG Work Study Program).
  • The award is to help defray expenses during the participation in their program.
  • Students must submit a one-page statement describing their intended program of study, a transcript (can be an unofficial transcript), and a reference from an instructor in their program. The submission will be adjudicated by the WCGS executive committee.
  • Students apply for this award by February 28 of each year for travel taking place between May 1 of that year and April 30 of the following year.
  • The WCGS Director will notify the award winners. Students must confirm their registration and/or acceptance in the program before funds will be processed.
