Getting SMART with the Student Success Office
A message from the Student Success Office.
A new online option for academic skill development is now available.
Through three self-paced, interactive micro-courses, the SMART program provides flexible, on-demand student support.
“The pandemic taught us the value of offering students choice in how they learn,” says Angela Rooke, manager, academic success and retention. “We designed the SMART program with accessibility and flexibility in mind."
Each micro-course takes 30-45 minutes to complete. Topics include time management, note-taking and self-advocacy.
"Building self-advocacy skills in students feels especially important now," shared Angela. "Students need confidence to recognize when to ask for help, and who to go to for support."

Conducting survey research? The Survey Research Centre is here to help
A message from the Survey Research Centre (SRC).
Established in 1999, the Survey Research Centre (SRC) serves as a pillar of research excellence at the University of Waterloo. The SRC offers everything from preliminary consultations to comprehensive packages complete with survey design, data collection, top-line analysis, and reports.
We offer faculty and students a free 1-hour consultation to help design effective survey questions that are clear and valid in order to reduce participant bias and maximize the information gathered from respondents.
We have expert knowledge of best survey practices and adhere to strict data collection procedures to help maximize survey response rates and collect high quality data. We offer a full suite of expertly tailored services from survey design consultation to survey data collection, analysis, and reporting for web, telephone, and mail surveys.

National Postdoc Appreciation Week coming up

Next week is National Postdoc Appreciation Week (NPAW)!
Originally started by the National Postdoctoral Association, NPAW takes place each year in September to recognize the significant contributions that postdoctoral scholars make to research and discovery. Universities across North America celebrate NPAW, and Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs (GSPA) is pleased to have been hosting NPAW activities for our postdocs since 2016. Next week postdocs will have the opportunity to join a variety of events such as our networking kick-off, a guided meditation, rock climbing, a virtual escape room, and more! If you are a postdoc who has not registered for these events, consider doing so now through the schedule of events on our website.
If you are faculty, staff, or another member of the University of Waterloo community, we encourage you to share these opportunities within your unit.
Students invited to Take Back the Night
A message from the Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Office (SVPRO).
University of Waterloo students are invited to participate in the Take Back the Night (TBTN) event in downtown Kitchener on Thursday, September 21 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. This year marks the 40th anniversary of Take Back the Night.
Take Back The Night is a powerful and empowering event that brings the community together to raise awareness about sexual violence and advocate for change. The event will be held in Kitchener's Gaukel Block.
The University of Waterloo will provide a bus to and from the event, leaving from Davis Centre at 5:45 p.m.
In advance of the main event, WUSA will be hosting a Crafternoon event on Tuesday, September 19 where attendees can kick off the event by creating their own impactful signs, buttons, bracelets, and tote bags in the SLC Multi-Purpose Room main floor. The Crafternoon event takes place from 12 noon to 4:00 p.m. Let your voice be heard through your art and messages!
