Congratulations to our alumnus, Mike Cecile, on winning the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists prestigious R.J.W. Douglas Medal. The Douglas Medal is presented annually in recognition of outstanding contributions to the understanding of sedimentary geology in Canada, including major contributions to regional tectonics, petroleum and structural geology.

A new mining technique uses microbes to recover metals and store carbon in the waste produced by mining. Adopting this approach of reusing mining waste, could transform the mining industry and create a greener and more sustainable future.

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences is mourning the passing of Dr. Paul Karrow. He was a founding member and the first Chair of the Department. Karrow passed away on February 5, 2023 at the age of 93.

Small isolated wetlands that are full for only part of the year are often the first to be removed for development or agriculture, but a new study shows that they can be twice as effective in protecting downstream lake or river ecosystems than if they were connected to them.

Nandita Basu named Canada Research Chair

Four Waterloo researchers are mong a group of Canada Research Chairs (CRCs) announced by the Government of Canada. Dr. Nandita Basu, jointly appointed to the Faculties of Engineering and Science, was named the Canada Research Chair in Global Water Sustainability and Ecohydrology.

2022 Gary Salmon Memorial Scholarship

Congratulations to Nahyan Rana – PhD student Nahyan Rana (working under the supervision of Professor Steve Evans in the Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences) has been awarded the 2022 Gary Salmon Memorial Scholarship of the Canadian Dam Association (CDA). The citation reads ‘in recognition of your academic excellence, quality research advancements in dam safety and the management of dams, and community leadership”.
