Alumni Relations at the Unviersity of Waterloo recognizes the academic achievements of graduating students by awarding Alumni Gold Medals during the University's convocation ceremonies. One undergraduate student representing each of Waterloo's six faculties receives this prestigious award. This year, the Arts Alumni Gold Medal was awarded to Mathematical Economics student, Qingyi Yan.

With the pandemic going on, there is lots of talk about CERB, the benefit that was created as an emergency response. Professor Stephanie Lluis wrote a memo for the C.D. Howe Institute titled, "Lessons from Employment Insurance for the CERB" where she discusses how employment insurance can provide guidance for the CERB. 

Several panel members presenting for an event hosted by Waterloo’s Gateway for  Enterprises to Discover Innovation (GEDI) about "Rebooting the Economy". Economics professor Joel Blit was one of the panel members. He talked about the impact of COVID-19 on the Canadian Economy, saying it will likely be a long recovery that will not affect all Canadians equally.

Congratulations to PhD student Renfang Tian who successfully defended her PhD! Her thesis is titled, “On Functional Data Analysis: Methodologies and Applications”. Her supervisor was Professor Tao Chen. The department is incredibly proud of your hard work. Renfang will be an Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) at King's University College at Western University. Excellent job, Renfang!
