Biomechanics Option

All options are subject to changes made by the department hosting the option. The ECE department is not notified of all such changes and therefore you must read the Calendar description.

The Biomechanics Option (as specified in the Undergraduate Calendar) requires that a student takes:

  • CIVE 460WEngineering Biomechanics or ME 598WSpecial Topics in Mechanical Engineering,
  • Four courses, one from each of four lists (A, B, C, and D), and
  • A 4th-year design project (ECE 498A and ECE 498B) related to the area of biomechanics.

For more information about biomechanics, you may wish to visit the Biomechanics Research Group.

Option Courses

Currently, CIVE 460W (required) and SYDE 543F (a List-B course) may be used as your two non-ECE technical electives (TEs).  Additionally, all ECE students take the List-C course ECE 380 Analog Control Systems in 3A as well as the 4th-year design project.  The course BIOL 273 Principles of Human Physiology 1W, S is an acceptable List-2 Natural Sciences Elective (NSE) and if you take the laboratory component, it is an acceptable List-1 NSE.  Finding a group of four other students to do a biomechanics-related project may, however, be difficult.

Consequently, this option can be achieved by taking only one (1) additional course from List-D Kinesiology.  As none of the List-D courses are currently offered through distance education, you would be required to to take either an extra course during an Academic Term, or replace one of your electives with a List-D course and take the elective (either a CSE or List-2 NSE) through distance education during a Co-op Work-term.

One student has submitted his comments on completing the Biomechanics Option.  Unfortunately, the course KIN 255 is no longer offered.

If you are a student has completed or nearly completed this option and would like to comment about scheduling your courses, work load, prerequisites you may have gotten waived, applications of the option, how it relates to the Electrical or Computer Engineering Program, etc., please contact the Webkeeper.
