Mathematics Option

Note: All options and minors are subject to changes made by the department hosting the option. The ECE department is not notified of all such changes and therefore you must read the Calendar description.

The Mathematics Option (as specified in the Undergraduate Calendar) is a sequence of eight courses that provides a student with a broad background in either pure or applied mathematics. Of these eight courses, three are already core Electrical or Computer Engineering courses (ECE 205, ECE 206, and ECE 316). Consequently, five (5) extra courses must be taken. Of the the required courses, MATH 235 Linear Algebra 2 is currently offered every term.  The Undergraduate Calendar, however, no longer lists when the other required courses are taught; consequently, it may be difficult to schedule the additional courses.

In order to take 5 extra courses, a student has two reasonable options:

  • Take one non-degree Academic Term (either replacing a Co-op Work Term or taking an Academic Term after 4B), or
  • Taking all four CSEs as online courses during Co-op Work Terms and taking one extra course in one of the five terms from 2B to 4B.

If a Co-op Job is located in Waterloo, it may be possible to arrange to attend class; however, not all placements allow this and it is not a requirement that an employer gives a co-op employee a flexible schedule allowing a student to attend classes.

If you are a student has completed or nearly completed this option and would like to comment about scheduling your courses, work load, prerequisites you may have gotten waived, applications of the option, how it relates to the Electrical or Computer Engineering Program, etc., please contact the Webkeeper.
