Professor Claudio Canizares is the recipient of the 2017 IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) Outstanding Power Engineering Educator Award “for fostering partnerships between industry and power engineering education and for developing innovative online power engineering programs”.

Students at the University of Waterloo have been chosen to compete in General Motors AutoDrive Challenge, a three year autonomous vehicle design competition to develop and demonstrate a fully operational driverless vehicle. 

Three companies aiming to do big things in the medical technology, insurance and automotive industries are the first to receive funding through a program for promising startup ventures at the University of Waterloo.

Elucid Labs, Knote and Acerta Systems Analytics will share $400,000 provided through the Spectrum 28 Mentor & Venture Program, a partnership between venture capitalist Lyon Wong and Waterloo Engineering.

ECE Professor Sherman Shen has been designated "University Professor" by the University of Waterloo's Tenure & Promotion Committee.  Professor Shen is the first in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering to be honoured with this distinction.

A novel combination of advanced design tools, low cost materials and commonly used manufacturing technologies and processes is helping University of Waterloo engineering professor Karim S. Karim develop better, safer imaging at a lower cost.

His startup company, KA Imaging, is commercializing a highly sensitive X-ray detector that produces a higher quality image with almost 40 percent less radiation, making the technology safer for both patients and the clinicians that operate it.

The recipients of the 2017 Amit and Meena Chakma Awards for Exceptional Teaching by a Student (AETS) were presented at Monday’s meeting of the University of Waterloo’s senate.

The Distinguished Teacher Awards for 2017 will be presented to four faculty members at convocation, associate vice-president, academic Mario Coniglio announced at last night’s meeting of the university senate.

Two teams of engineering students at the University of Waterloo have been awarded $50,000 each to turn their fourth-year projects into startup companies after graduation.

The funding is provided by celebrated Waterloo Engineering graduates Chamath Palihapitiya and his wife Brigette Lau, founders of Social Capital, a Silicon Valley venture capital fund dedicated to solving some of the world’s most difficult problems.

"It does look like a science fair on steroids, but it's much more sophisticated than that," said Beth Cotter, associate director of marketing and communications for the engineering faculty.
