The Cryospheric Science Group of the Interdisciplinary Centre on Climate Change (IC3) is pleased to announce the monthly Cryosphere Research Group Seminar Series for October given by Sandor Balo and Dr. Richard Kelly, entitled "Snowtweets evolution: snow science for citizens."
The Snowtweets project was launched in 2009 to solicit citizen scientist measurements of snow depth. Snowtweets is now a global crowdsourced mapping initiative designed to get snow depth observations from anyone in the world using Twitter. In recent developments, the Snowtweets team has re-engineered the web interface by simplifying the user experience, improving the visual presentation, and opening up the data for anyone to use. The interface is now served using the Leaflet application that interfaces with the PostgreSQL database via PHP and html tools.
Importantly, functionality has been extended for users that do not have a Twitter account. Snowtweets now allows users to contribute directly through a simple geolocated web interface form. The talk will explain how Snowtweets works and how it has developed into its current version along with what the plans are for future directions.
Any member of the Faculty of Environment is welcome to attend!
