Employment opportunity: NSERC Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Ecosystem and Climate

The Faculty of Environment at the University of Waterloo (https://uwaterloo.ca/environment/) is seeking applications for a nomination to a NSERC Canada Research Chair Tier 2. The theme is Ecosystem and Climate with a focus on one or more of the following areas:

  1. Soil-vegetation-atmosphere interactions including boundary layer processes;
  2. Aquatic ecology and ecosystem modeling;
  3. Hydroclimatology and/or ecosystem functioning;
  4. Frequency and magnitude of events/hazards and risks in natural systems (e.g. slope stability, floods).

We are particularly interested in applicants who can address scientific problems across spatial and temporal scales and who can combine diverse approaches and methodologies in their research program (e.g. data mining and analysis, laboratory work, modeling, field experimentation).

The Faculty of Environment at the University of Waterloo is a world leader in interdisciplinary research and teaching on the environment and sustainability. The Faculty is the home of five academic units: Department on Environment and Resource Studies, Department of Geography and Environmental Management, Center for Knowledge Integration, School of Environment, Enterprise and Development and the School of Planning. The Faculty is a dynamic and vibrant academic environment with 70 faculty members, 45 staff, 2 000 undergraduate students and 500 graduate students. The Faculty is innovative in its teaching and cutting edge in its research.

The selected candidate will join the Department of Geography and Environmental Management or the Department of Environment and Resource Studies. Applicants are encouraged to establish links between their research program and the activities at the Water Institute, the Interdisciplinary Center on Climate Change or the Center on Ecosystem Resilience and Adaptation all housed at the University of Waterloo. Potential candidates should have an established record of excellence in research and have demonstrated an ability to teach and supervise students.     • i. their qualifications for a successful Chair application; 
      ii. the fit of their profile and expertise with one or more of the focused areas; 
      iii. the vision and future research program for the Chair; 
      iv. novel opportunities for training highly qualified personnel; 
      v. the potential for the Chair to enhance the scholarly leadership and innovation capacity of the Faculty and University in strategic areas.

Deadline for submission: We will begin to examine applications on May 20, 2013 until a potential nominee for the CRC is found. The appointment is subject to budgetary approval and approval by the CRC program review process.
