Intellectual Property: What is it and Why Should I Care?

Speaker: Tom Hunter

Abstract: Intellectual Property Management and Laws are to the Information Technology Revolution what Labour Management and Laws were to the Industrial Revolution. Each permits society to manage and benefit from a period of extraordinary scientific discovery and development. Many of today's succesful companies have embraced and utilise IP to their advantage but the inventor or entrepreneur who ignores these laws is the master of his own demise. But what is IP? What is the difference between a patent, a design and a trademark? Why should technologists and scientists be concerned about laws designed to protect the creative arts? In this first lecture, the fundamentals of IP and the landscape it creates will be explored.
