Towards practical long-distance quantum communication
IQC Special Seminar, Xiaoqing Zhong, Senior Consultant Ernst & Young
Quantum communication has revolutionized the way we approach information processing and transmission. Building on the principles of quantum mechanics, quantum communication technologies offer capabilities that are impossible with classical communication. For example, quantum key distribution (QKD), the most well-known quantum communication protocol, enables two remote parties to communicate with information-theoretic security. However, despite the theoretical promise, quantum communication technologies have to overcome numerous hurdles before they can be applied in practice.
In this presentation, we will review the challenges facing the development of long-distance quantum communication, with a focus on QKD. Specifically, we will discuss the fundamental rate-distance limit of QKD and explore the recent progress on improving the limit. Additionally, we will also discuss some potential future directions for further advancing the practical applications of QKD, ultimately paving the way for a secure and efficient communication infrastructure.
