Experiences in Uganda: Beyond Borders

Monday, May 26, 2014

Alex Pearce, third-year KI student, is involved in the Beyond Borders program, an academically centered international service-learning experience at St. Jerome’s University. The program consists of two terms of on-campus course work and a 90-day placement abroad.

This summer, she is living in Kampala, Uganda, working with an organization called Reach Out Mbuya. Reach Out Mbuya is an HIV/AIDS initiative that takes a holistic approach to helping limit the spread of HIV/AIDS as well as help families and individuals that have already been infected. There is a primary health clinic, a health education program centred around AIDS prevention, a school for children orphaned by the AIDS epidemic, a village savings & loans association, as well as a variety of other activities focused on helping individuals in every aspect they can.
