Cardinal Consort of Viols

For well over a decade, the Cardinal Consort of Viols has been bringing exquisite music of the 16th and 17th centuries to Southern Ontario audiences. The group members are Sheila Smyth (treble viola da gama), Linda Deshman (tenor viol), Sara Blake (alto & bass viols) and Valerie Sylvester (bass viol). For this performance they will be performing with Canadian soprano Meredith Hall, who delights audiences internationally with her “lustrous sound and fluent legato” (San Francisco Chronicle) and “bravura musical performance matched by a riveting [sense of the] dramatic” (Boston Globe). Featured composers include John Dowland, Claudia Rusca, Domenico Cato, and others. These Renaissance and early Baroque composers all contributed to the rich tapestry of early European music, particularly in sacred or courtly contexts.
