Since 2013, there has hardly been a University of Waterloo Music Department concert, competition, or ensemble performance that Angelica Allen didn't help bring to life.

At Conrad Grebel University College, Angelica has been the logistical mastermind behind more than 400 musical events over the last 13 years, reaching tens of thousands of audience members. With patience and dedication, she worked tirelessly to book venues, select dates, set rehearsal schedules, create and print programs, sell tickets, troubleshoot, move equipment, mobilize volunteers, communicate with students, and coordinate the front of house.

Originally hired for just a few days a week, Angelica’s core responsibility was to coordinate Grebel’s concert series and growing ensemble program. “In very short order, she proved a valuable and indispensable member of the department, bringing her exceptional organizational skills and her collegial attitude to all tasks,” explained former Music Chair Laura Gray. “Her organization and dedication meant that we could expand our ensemble offerings to serve many more students at UWaterloo.” Shortly after she was hired, the Gamelan ensemble was established, and a few years later, Grebel assumed administrative oversight of the Orchestra@UWaterloo. “Angelica became the go-to person for ensemble directors, students, and guest performers.”

“Many people who might retire from administrative positions leave behind important work that goes unseen,” explained Music Chair Mark Vuorinen at Angelica’s retirement party. “But Angelica’s work has been visible to thousands of students, staff and audience members,” he continued. “The strange thing is that when I asked people about Angelica, very few started by talking about concerts. Instead, they talked about relationships.”

Again and again, colleagues described Angelica as someone who notices people. Music Professor Emerita Carol Ann Weaver said that Angelica "sees what you need and how to supply it, even before you notice you've needed something." Others noted that she remembers details, follows up, and consistently makes people feel welcomed and cared for.

Former Adjunct Music Instructor Ben Bolt-Martin shared about Angelica's remarkable listening ability. “She is a caring and active listener. Her sensitivity, calm demeanour, and her attention to detail are all tied up in the same skillset of careful listening.”

Beyond the Music Department, Angelica’s contributions to the Grebel community included establishing the “Souper Bowl” lunch, puzzle exchange, and the “Chip Bender Chip Bender,” as well as leading the Staff Association. She was always ready for conversation around the lunch table, and always seems to know just the right resource, event, or book to suggest.

In retirement, Angelica looks forward to reading, playing pickleball, traveling in her trailer with her husband Blair, and continuing to be involved in the communities she cares about.

“What is clear is that Angelica has helped shape the culture of Grebel. Through her work, her kindness, her patience, and her commitment to community, she has made this a better place,” summarized Mark. “Angelica, thank you for everything you have given to Grebel. Your work has enriched this community in ways that will continue long after your final concert is scheduled and your final room booking is complete.”
