Preceptor / Mentorship award Tom McFarlane and Tom's smiling face

Prof. Tom McFarlane is the 2021 recipient of the Preceptor / Mentorship Award by the Canadian Association of Pharmacy in Oncology

The following announcement is provided by the Canadian Association of Pharmacy in Oncology.

Tom McFarlane from the University of Waterloo has been awarded the Preceptor / Mentorship Award by the Canadian Association of Pharmacy in Oncology (CAPhO). The award recognizes McFarlane as a mentor and preceptor and as a member who has sought student engagement within the profession. The award was presented at the CAPhO Virtual Conference 2021, on Saturday, June 5, 2021.

McFarlane was nominated separately by two former students. In nominating McFarlane, Nastaran Keshmiri wrote, “In addition to being an exemplary clinical lecturer at the University of Waterloo School of Pharmacy, McFarlane demonstrates an extraordinary commitment to supporting pharmacy students in other areas of oncology including research, educating students on the role of pharmacists in oncology and as a preceptor and clinical pharmacist at the Odette Cancer Centre.”

Alexandra Goldstein, current Doctor of Pharmacy candidate, started her nomination letter by stating she has had the “honour of having McFarlane as a professor”. She described his teaching, advocacy work, and student support initiatives using words such as “encouraging”, “supportive,” and “dedicated”. In closing, she wrote, “McFarlane has shown a sincere dedication to supporting students with an interest in oncology and to teaching within this field. He exemplifies the qualities of a great mentor and he could not be more deserving of this award”.

In addition to his academic responsibilities, McFarlane “goes above and beyond” to support students, by volunteering to speak, judge or assess at student events, by being an integral member of the Oncology Pharmacy Interest Group at the University.
