Waterloo Pharmacy students reflect on rural healthcare
Randilynne Urslak (Rx2023) and Thao Dao (Rx2023) spent their last co-op work term in a rural community in Peace River, Alberta
Urslak and Dao wrote an article on how this experience changed their lives and opened their eyes to what the pharmacy profession can do with a full scope of practice for patients and entire communities.
"I am so grateful to CPhA for giving us a platform to share our experience," says Urslak. "I hope it encourages others to take a leap, always say 'yes' to new opportunities, explore your passions and advocate for what you believe in. That is what co-op is all about and you never know what new path you may find yourself on!"
They reflect on the difference between learning about healthcare challenges in class and experiencing them first hand, while implementing knowledge into practice where resources are limited.
"Co-op is such an important aspect of our pharmacy education," says Dao. "It opens our eyes to all the unique pathways that exist, it opens doors to all the different opportunities out there but most importantly it opens our mind to show us where we are meant to belong in the pharmacy world."
