A current model laptop computer is strongly recommended.

PC Recommendations:

  • 64-bit Windows (10 or 11) with an Intel i5 or higher processor or equivalent
  • 8 GB or more of RAM
  • 256 GB hard drive with at least 4 GB of available free space
  • Administrator level account permissions required for online exams

Mac Recommendations:

  • MacOS 12 or higher with an Apple M series processor
  • 8 GB or more of RAM
  • 256 GB hard drive or higher with at least 4 GB of available free space
  • Administrator level account permissions required for online exams

If you will be presenting in the classroom using your laptop, you will need an HDMI connector or adaptor to connect your laptop.

Microsoft office 365 is available to all students including 5 TB of OneDrive storage space.

The latest version of Adobe Reader is required for online exams containing PDF attachments.

Feature Minimum Requirement Preferred Why?
Processor Intel I5 Intel I7/Apple M1 The newer operating systems and applications require the latest generation of processors to run efficiently. The i5 offers basic computing capability, but the extra speed of the i7 will ensure your computer can keep up with you for the next few years.
Memory 8 GB 16 GB Today's operating systems require at least 4 GB of RAM to run efficiently, 16 GB to run well. If you'd like to run more than one program at a time then please consider 16 GB of ram.
Hard Disk 256 GB 1 TB If your computer comes with a solid state option, it will be faster and more reliable. Don't get anything smaller than a 256 as you will find yourself running out of space soon. External hard drives and online storage can help to alleviate space concerns as you go.
Operating System Windows 10 (64 Bit) Mac OS 12 Windows 10/11 (64 Bit) Mac OS 14

Being as up-to-date as possible is key to:

  • Ensure that all of your course materials work correctly
  • You are able to take advantage of new sharing, backup, and productivity features that these operating systems offer
  • All security and virus protection features stay up to date

Keep in mind that some ultra-portable or ultra-book models are less upgradeable or flexible than others. One such example is the Macbook Air. Plan on buying a computer that will last the duration that you need, even if this means a slight increase in price, since you can't go back later and add more RAM or a larger hard drive.
