Supervisors
- Fill out this form at least four months before the student's approximate defence time. An actual defence date does not need to be set at this time.
- A valid examining committee needs to be identified to proceed with submission. Review the Physics and Astronomy Program Milestones page and/or the Physics Graduate Community in LEARN to confirm that the proposed committee meets PhD Thesis Examination Committee requirements.
- Review PhD Thesis Examination Regulations on the academic calendar.
- If you need to request an exception to the regulations, the Faculty of Science Exception Request Form must be submitted/completed before the external examiner nomination can proceed.
- The most common exception we see in Physics and Astronomy is a request to have more than one non-supervisory adjunct member serve on the examining committee.
- Confirm that the External Examiner meets the following criteria:
- The nominee holds an academic appointment of at least 5 years or similar industry experience.
- The nominee has provided a full list of supervised PhD students, both current and graduated.
- The nominee must be at arm’s length from the candidate’s thesis, candidate and supervisor(s) and additionally must not be in a potential conflict of interest with regards to the outcome of the examination. Such conflicts are outlined in the Graduate Studies and Post-Doctoral Affairs PhD Regulations
- The nominee must provide a full and up-to-date CV with publications covering at least the past 6 years. 3-5 publications from this time frame that are relevant to the thesis must be highlighted or attached in a list separately.
