Postdoctoral fellow Elena Caruso: Feminist Activism, Medical Doctors and Abortion Law

In this talk, Dr. Caruso will focus on the three-month feminist occupation of a Rome hospital in 1978 in the immediate aftermath of this legislative reform, which aimed to embed a feminist approach to the provision of abortion care. Drawing on overlooked archival materials and original interviews with feminist abortion campaigners, I will bring to light the little-known history of this occupation.

The International Political Economy Best Book Award recognizes an outstanding monograph in the field of IPE published within the past two years.

More than $3.3 million was awarded to Waterloo researchers to support research infrastructure and solutions to societal challenges through Canada Foundation for Innovation and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.

The Department of Political Science is proud to celebrate Heather Whiteside; she was awarded an Insight Development Grant for her work on Canada Lands Company.

What international issues become national interests worth fighting for, and why?

In her upcoming article in the American Political Science Review, Professor Soyoung Lee of Yale University argues that, contrary to conventional wisdom, issues without clear economic value, such as barren lands, are more likely to be perceived as national interests and hence more likely to trigger international conflicts.

Sabrina Lei is currently a Visiting Scholar with the Department of Poltiical Science from School of Public Affairs, Xiamen University, China. Sabrina's research theme focus is “Diplomatic Positioning of the States: A Comparison between China and Canada”, and she is currently working on the book  “Consensus and Control: Analysis of Human Political Life”.

Dr. Tamara Troyakova is Head of the International Studies Department in the Oriental Institute, School of Regional and International Studies, Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU, Vladivostok, Russia). She received her High Education Diploma in History from Leningrad State University and her Candidate of Sciences (PhD) in History from the Institute of General History, USSR Academy of Sciences, Moscow.
