Over the last year, a thorough review of the Associate Vice-President, Academic (AVPA) portfolio has been conducted to assess the functions, structure, effectiveness, efficiency, alignment, and coordination with other relevant portfolios and functions that intersect with the AVPA portfolio.

I am pleased to announce that the Board of Governors has approved the reappointment of Professor Mary Wells as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering for a three-year term commencing 1 July 2025 and ending 30 June 2028.

In November’s Budget Town Hall and in our last update to the community, we shared an update with you on how we are dealing with our current and projected operating budget deficits. We want to keep you in the loop with this work.

Transitioning to a Hiring Freeze

We are thankful for everyone’s engagement with our efforts to balance the budget while continuing to pursue our strategic objectives as an institution. Thank you to those who joined us for the Operating Budget Town Hall.

As we approach next week's Budget Town Hall, I want to share important details we'll discuss at the event. Despite decades of careful financial management, ongoing sector challenges continue to pressure our budget.

After a substantial amount of consideration and reflection, I have decided to step down as Vice-President, Academic and Provost effective June 30, 2025. My family and I have determined that next summer will be the right time for me to step aside from the duties as Provost.

The University and FAUW agreed to Arbitration (Final Offer Selection) as per the Memorandum of Agreement section 10.8 and the hearing was held on March 25, 2024. Final response briefs were submitted April 8,2024 and the arbitrator, Kevin Burkett, decision is now available.

Fall Operating Budget Update

Last Spring, the Board of Governors approved the University’s 2023/24 operating budget. At the time, we committed to providing an extraordinary Fall operating budget update because we knew that it was going to be a challenging financial year.
