Geometry & Topology seminar

Tom Baird, Memorial University, Newfoundland

“Moduli spaces of vector bundles over a real curve”

In a seminal paper in 1983, Atiyah and Bott calculated the Betti numbers of the moduli space of holomorphic bundles over a complex curve using Morse theory of the Yang-Mills functional.

Thursday, October 31, 2013 1:30 pm - 1:30 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Number Theory seminar

Chester Weatherby, Wilfrid Laurier University

"A generalization of Euler's theorem for (2k)."

We will explicitly evaluate the sum P n2Z 1 (n2+Bn+C)k for parameters B;C. The approach will involve Fourier methods as well as some simple combinatorics. Once an explicit form is calculated, we are able to say something about the transcendence of these sums in special cases.

Friday, November 1, 2013 2:30 pm - 2:30 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Universal Algebra seminar

Alex Wires, Department of Pure Mathematics, University Waterloo

“Taylor Algebras and Digraphs II”

We will continue the proofs of two well-known results characterizing digraphs admitting a Taylor operation.

Friday, November 1, 2013 3:30 pm - 3:30 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Analysis seminar

Jason Crann, Carleton University & Universit ́e Lille I

“Amenability and injectivity of locally compact quantum groups”

As is well known, the equivalence between amenability of a locally compact group G and injectivity of its von Neumann algebra L(G) does not hold in general beyon

Monday, November 4, 2013 4:00 pm - 4:00 pm EST (GMT -05:00)

Pure Math colloquium

Achim Kempf, Applied Math Department, University of Waterloo

“New methods for spectral geometry: hearing the shape of things”

Refreshments will be served in MC 5046 at 3:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Tuesday, November 5, 2013 10:30 am - 10:30 am EST (GMT -05:00)

Constraint Satisfaction and Universal Algebra learning seminar

Renzhi Song, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

“Taylor and cyclic terms on finite algebras, The End”

Finally we will finish showing the equivalence of existence of Taylor and cyclic terms on finite algebras.

Tuesday, November 5, 2013 2:30 pm - 2:30 pm EST (GMT -05:00)

Kadison-Singer seminar

Rafael Clouatre, Department of Pure Mathematics University of Waterloo

“Kadison-Singer Problem: the multivariate barrier argument”

We will continue working through the paper by Marcus, Spielman and Srivastav. This talk will cover half of section 5 on the multivariate barrier argument.

Tuesday, November 5, 2013 3:30 pm - 3:30 pm EST (GMT -05:00)

Group Cohomology learning seminar

Matthew Beckett, University of Waterloo

“Extension of Scalars”

We continue our steady march towards Corollary 3.13 in Kenneth Brown’s Cohomology of Groups. In this talk we will be discussing extension of scalars which is covered in Section III.3. Given an R- module and a homomorphism from R to S, extension of scalars allows us to define an S-module.

Wednesday, November 6, 2013 2:30 pm - 2:30 pm EST (GMT -05:00)

Analysis seminar

Ken Harrison, Murdoch University

“Reflexivity for topological spaces”

A family L of closed subsets of a topological space X is said to be reflexive if there is a family F of continuous endomorphisms on X such that L

Number Theory seminar

John J.C. Saunders, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

“Sums of Digits in q-ary expansions”

Let sq(n) denote the sum of the digits of a number n expressed in base q.
