Computability Learning Seminar

Mohammad Mahmoud, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

“A syntactic characterization”

R.i.c.e. relations can be characterized in a purely syntactic way using computably infinitary formulas and without referring to the different copies of the structure. We go through the proof of Theorem II.1.14 that establishes this characterization.

Wednesday, October 5, 2016 2:30 pm - 2:30 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Algebra Seminar

Jason Bell, Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

"The Schafke-Singer theorem, II"

We start the proof of the theorem of Schafke and Singer.

Thursday, October 6, 2016 1:30 pm - 1:30 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Topos Theory Learning Seminar

Christopher Hawthorne, Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

We begin chapter 4 of Goldblatt. (Category theory background from chapter 3 will be assumed.) We introduce subobjects and subobject classifiers; time permitting, we will get to the definition of a topos.

Thursday, October 6, 2016 4:00 pm - 4:00 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Differential Geometry Learning Seminar

Clair Dai, Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

"Introduction to Riemann Surfaces"

We will give a brief introduction of the basic concepts of Riemann surfaces, maps between Riemann surfaces, and several examples following the chapter 3 & 4 of the Dr.Donaldson's notes.

Friday, October 7, 2016 11:30 am - 11:30 am EDT (GMT -04:00)

Ring Theory Seminar

Blake Madill, Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

"Hopf Algebras Continued"

We continue our investigation of Hopf algebras. In particular, we will discuss universal enveloping algebras of lie algebras.

Friday, October 7, 2016 2:30 pm - 2:30 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Geometry and Topology Seminar

Francois Charette, University of Ottawa

"On the cohomology ring of closed orientable Lagrangian
submanifolds with vanishing Floer homology"

I will give new restrictions on the topology of certain Lagrangian 3-manifolds whose Lagrangian Floer homology vanishes and give
applications to open Gromov-Witten invariants. I will provide the
necessary background from symplectic geometry.

Friday, October 7, 2016 3:30 pm - 3:30 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Analysis Seminar

Alex Bearden, University of Houston

"Hilbert C*-modules over Sigma*-algebras"

A Sigma*-algebra is a concrete C*-algebra that is sequentially closed in
the weak operator topology. We study a class of C*-modules over
Sigma*-algebras analogous to the class of W*-modules (selfdual C*-modules over W*-algebras), and we are able to obtain Sigma*-versions of virtually all the basic results about C*- and W*-modules. We then apply the theory of Sigma*-modules to define and study a version of Morita equivalence for Sigma*-algebras.

Mengxue Yang, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

“The Curvature of Higher Dimensional Manifolds, Part I”

Friday, October 14, 2016 9:00 am - 9:00 am EDT (GMT -04:00)

Geometric Analysis Seminar

Shubham Dwivedi, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo
