Analysis Seminar

Nico Spronk, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

"On projections in group and measure algebras"

Monday, February 6, 2017 11:30 am - 11:30 am EST (GMT -05:00)

Algebraic Geometry Seminar

Ivan Kobyzev, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

In this talk we will go back to log-concavity problem and show how Chow groups can help us to solve it. We will see what properties we need from this cohomology theory.

Ertan Elma, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

"An Application of the Larger Sieve"

We will continue by an application of the larger sieve. (Due to the fire alarm last week, we were able to prove only the larger sieve inequality).

Algebraic Geometry Learning Seminar

Patrick Naylor, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

"Structure Sheaves"

This week, we'll get to section 4.1, and the final ingredient in the definition of an affine scheme: the structure sheaf. We'll revisit the notion of a sheaf on a base, and use it to actually make this definition. It's only taken us since September, but we're almost at the general definition of a scheme!

Representation Theory Seminar

Ehsaan Hossain, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

"Borel Subgroups"

As the title suggests, we'll be discussing the notion of a Borel subgroup (maximal connected solvable subgroup) of a linear algebraic group as well as semisimple algebraic groups.
